Mobius is the name of the world on which the primary events of the Mobius campaign setting take place. Mobius is a planet which takes the shape of a [Möbius strip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6bius_strip) which wraps completely around the green dwarf star that it orbits, [[Naboth]]. The planet is home to a variety of intelligent species who evolved on Mobius and its satellite moons, but have not yet developed the means of reliable long-range space travel to other star systems. Mobius is also home to several species of aliens who have arrived there from other star systems. Due to the Shattering of the moon [[Iusem]], faster-than-light travel in the vicinity of the [[Mobius System]] is currently not possible, limiting local space travel to Mobius and its habitable moons.

# Description
Mobius is a paradoxically-shaped planet. Unlike most planets, which take the shape of a sphere and orbit around their parent star, Mobius takes the shape of a long, continuous Möbius strip which completely surrounds its parent star—a tiny green dwarf star named [[Naboth]] which is itself part of a binary pair forming the [[Mobius System]] along with its partner star [[Olearius]].

> # Möbius strip
> ![[mobius strip.gif|cover hsmall]]
A Möbius strip is a one-sided surface with no boundaries that's created by attaching the ends of a strip of paper together after twisting one end by half. It's also known as a Möbius band or Möbius loop.
As a result of Mobius' shape, the entire planet is one continuous surface that can be traversed by traveling in either direction laterally along the strip. Adventurous travelers can also take shortcuts by attempting to pass up and over the edge of the strip, landing on the "opposite" side of the strip—though doing so is regarded as highly dangerous and is rarely attempted. There are also places where it is possible to pass through underground and emerge on the "opposite" side of the strip.
Mobius "orbits" [[Naboth]] by physically twisting in a circular motion such that if you stood in place in any one location on the surface of Mobius, that spot would loop around the "inside" of the planet that faces [[Naboth]], pass through a twist and then loop around the "outside" of the planet which faces away from [[Naboth]] before passing back through another twist to return to the "inside."
## Satellites
There are nine satellites in elliptical orbits around [[Naboth]] and Mobius. Due to Mobius' unique shape--which completely surrounds [[Naboth]] in a tight loop--all nine satellites orbit the collective gravitational pair that is formed by Mobius and [[Naboth]]. Scientists debate whether these objects are truly orbiting [[Naboth]] (which would make them planets), orbiting Mobius (which would make them moons), or orbiting the combined gravity of Naboth and Mobius (making them some yet-unnamed category of quasi-planet/quasi-moon). Academic debates aside, Mobians have settled on referring to those 9 satellites as "moons" of Mobius:
| Moon | Primary Inhabitants |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------ |
| [[Araujo]] | [[Laudal]] |
| [[Doria]] | [[Riesz]], [[Lax]] (Fire), [[Hjort]] |
| [[Iusem]] | [[Szekeres]], [[Pyber]] |
| [[Teixeira]] | [[Sinding]], [[Myconids]], [[Lax]] (Death) |
| [[Nachbin]] | [[Vargha]], [[Cnidaran]] |
| [[Palis]] | [[Krogh]], [[Bott]] |
| [[Peixoto]] | [[Lax]] (Shadow) |
| [[Simis]] | [[Csorgo]], [[Erdos]] |
| [[Viana]] | [[Pixie]], [[Aardal]], [[Aanderaa]] |
## Calendar
A Mobian day--the time it takes for a given point to complete the entire loop--lasts approximately 30 hours. A Mobian day begins at "twist-in," when a given spot passes through one of the twists to face inside towards [[Naboth]] for 15 hours of daylight. The halfway point of a day is "twist-out," when that same spot passes through the second twist to face away from [[Naboth]] for 15 hours of darkness.
A Mobian year is measured by [[Naboth]]'s orbit with its binary partner [[Olearius]], which it completes every 270 days. The year is broken up into nine equal months, each 30 days long. The months are named after the nine moons of Mobius. Because the nine moons each have their own unique orbital cycle, the months do not correspond to the orbital cycle of any individual moon. Rather they are a convenient way to divide the Mobian year and remember the names of both the months and the moons:
* Araujan
* Doriannum
* Iusemal
* Teixeiran
* Nachbinal
* Palisan
* Peixoton
* Simistan
* Viannal
Because the entirety of Mobius orbits [[Naboth]] at an equal distance, climate variation across the year on Mobius is relatively mild, and governed by [[Naboth]] and Mobius's collective orbit around [[Olearius]]. The orbit of [[Naboth]] around its binary partner is slightly elliptical, and the variation in distance causes a slight overall increase or decrease in temperature throughout the year. [[Naboth]] reaches the apogee (furthest point) of its orbit from [[Olearius]] on Araujan 1 and the perigee (closest point) on Nachbinal 15.
Mobian years are numbered in reference to [[The Undoing]], a great cataclysmic social upheaval which occurred approximately 50,000 years ago. Moving backwards from the Upheaval, years are numbered in terms of "B.U" or "Before Upheaval" and moving forwards from the Upheaval, years are numbered in terms of "A.U." or "After Upheaval."

# Geography
## Arzach
*Main article:* [[Arzach]]
Arzach is the major western continent of [[Mobius]], consisting mostly of dense jungles, forests, and mountain ranges with some low-lying grasslands near the coasts. Despite its rather hostile terrain and dangerous flora and fauna, the continent of Arzach is nevertheless one of the most densely populated of the planet's major continents, having been settled the longest. Historians believe that the first Oldfangled species evolved on [[Mobius]] in the jungles around Lake Gorgo.
## Hebra
*Main article:* [[Hebra]]
[[Hebra]] is a small continent in south-central [[Mobius]], featuring a massive crystalline mountain range surrounded by dense forests of pink and purple trees. The majority of [[Hebra]] is extremely cold, with the exception of the Nabooru Desert to the north.
## Saura
*Main article:* [[Saura]]
[[Saura]] is the eastern half of the massive north-central landmass on [[Mobius]], separated from [[The Crimson Sands]] in the west by the Chacon Mountains. [[Saura]] consists mostly of temperate grasslands and coastal jungles, and it home to a number of coastal communities.
## The Crimson Sands
*Main article:* [[The Crimson Sands]]
[[The Crimson Sands]] is the western half of the massive north-central landmass on [[Mobius]], laying west of the Chacon Mountains. [[The Crimson Sands]] consist largely of inhospitable pink sand deserts and are very sparsely populated.
## Mercator
*Main article:* [[Mercator]]
[[Mercator]] is a temperate and densely-populated region on the southeastern end of [[Mobius]]' large eastern landmass. The [[Mercator]] region is home to rich volcanic soil, fertile farmlands and vineyards, and scenic seaside cities and towns.
## Calusa
## Degermark
## Darien
*Main article:* [[Darien]]
[[Darien]] is a large island continent in eastern [[Mobius]], consisting mostly of dense jungle, swamps, and interconnected lakes. [[Darien]] is renown for being particularly inhospitable, even by Mobian standards.

# Society
Mobius is home to a variety of cultures of intelligent people that evolved on Mobius and have since engaged in local space travel, colonizing the moons and other planets within the [[Mobius System]]. Mobian societies are extremely diverse and cosmopolitan. Although many regions, towns, or cities have a culture with which they are historically associated, nearly every major civilization and city on the planet is home to a mix of people representing every one of the planet's native cultures, people of mixed cultural heritage, as well as some aliens. Conflicts among Mobian societies tend to be political, rather than racial.
Cultural stratification within Mobian societies does exist, but is rooted in historical socioeconomic and political factors rather than any overt racial or species discrimination. Mobian culture displays a high degree of respect for the gender identity and sexual orientation of every person—to the point that the concept of discrimination on the basis of such factors is unheard of. Mobian culture also has a high regard for personal bodily autonomy, and the concepts of sexual violence and chattel slavery are so deeply taboo that they are functionally nonexistent in Mobian society.
## Religion
*Main article:* [[Deities]]
Inhabitants of the [[Mobius System]] observe a form of naturalist polytheism centered around a pantheon of solar and lunar major deities. These gods are typically anthropomorphized with humanoid-like traits, personalities, and mythological stories about their exploits. But for the most part, these major gods of the Mobian pantheon tend to be understood as distant figureheads of their domains, and are not generally known to interact personally or directly with their followers.
Most Mobians—especially those who are not part of the clergy of a specific deity—tend to be omnitheists: generally accepting that no one deity is supreme or superior to the others, but rather that each deity has their place in the universe, responsible for their own domains. Adherence to specific religious practices tends to be more a matter of loose cultural tradition for most Mobians that does not play a significant role in their day-to-day lives. Even where a person has a specific deity they associate with, it would also not be unusual or frowned upon to call upon another deity in a time where they needed something that fell within that god's domain.
In addition to the major naturalistic deities, the [[Mobius System]] is also replete with powerful beings and creatures of immense power who attract devotion, adherence, and worship on a much smaller, often entirely individual scale. These minor "deities" are much more personal and literal--often they are simply a creature or a person who has ascended to a position of great power through evolution, technology, or both.

## People
*Main article:* [[People]]
Mobians classify the various intelligent species that evolved within the [[Mobius System]] into two major categories: the Oldfangled and the Vogue. The Oldfangled species evolved on the planet of Mobius itself, and are typically much older cultures, having existed for around 500,000 to a million years. The Vogue species evolved on Mobius' moons, and are generally younger cultures, having evolved somewhere in the last 100,000-200,000 years. There are also two species of aliens living in the [[Mobius System]] that originated elsewhere in space—the [[Pyber]] and the [[Szekeres]].
### Oldfangled
The Oldfangled were the first intelligent people to evolve in the [[Mobius System]], and dominated the planet of Mobius for hundreds of thousands of years, building massive civilizations that covered the planet. Although some diversity existed even in these older Oldfangled civilizations, they tended to be much more culturally homogenous than present-day Mobian societies. Then, approximately 50,000 years ago during a period known as The Undoing, virtually all of the major Oldfangled civilizations existing at the time collapsed and fell into ruin and disrepair, with most of their cities and structures being reclaimed by nature. This led to a great cultural upheaval as well mass migration between Mobius and its moons while civilization rebuilt itself on Mobius. The current post-Undoing civilizations that now occupy Mobius are far more diverse than those that predated the Undoing, containing a mix of Oldfangled, Vogue, and Aliens. Nevertheless, owing to their great age and historical roots on the planet, the Oldfangled tend to be the majority cultures in most regions of the planet of Mobius itself.

### Vogue
"Vogue" is an umbrella term which refers to the intelligent species who evolved somewhere in the [[Mobius System]] other than Mobius itself—typically on one of Mobius's [[Mobius#Satellites|moons]]. The term was ascribed to these species because they are the younger, "newcomers" among the intelligent species in the [[Mobius System]]. The Vogue species also engaged in a great deal of migration to Mobius itself following The Undoing, which coincided with the rise of newer, more diverse and cosmopolitan civilizations. Thus, the term "Vogue" is also used to convey the idea that these species brought fresh, new ideas and traditions with them to be incorporated into Mobian culture.

### Aliens
There are only two intelligent species in the [[Mobius System]] who are alien to the system itself. The [[Szekeres]] arrived 350 years ago, when their ship miscalculated its course through hyperspace and crashed into the moon [[Iusem]] and causing The Shattering—a cataclysm that fractured the moon into pieces and killed virtually of the prior inhabitants. The [[Pyber]] arrived 50 years ago, having traveled from their homeworld to investigate The Shattering.
