It is also the name of the [[Lax]] deity of trickery, shadow, and night. > [!Table of Contents]+ > 1. [[#Moon]] > 2. [[#Deity]] > 3. [[#Worldbuilding References]] # Moon Peixoto is a small, dark moon composed entirely of the shiny, black volcanic rock known as "tezcat." Peixoto itself has little to no geological activity, so it is believed that it formed from a massive volcanic event on another world which flung molten rock into space. The leading theory is that the entire mass of Peixoto was ejected by the eruption which formed the enormous dormant volcanic crater on [[Nachbin]] which is now home to the Great Crimson Sea. Tezcat is a deep, pure black color and naturally absorbs all wavelengths of incoming visible light. Tezcat does not absorb ultraviolet light, however. Thus, the flora and fauna that have evolved on Peixoto are accustomed to living in what most species perceive as darkness, depending instead on their ability to absorb or perceive the ultraviolet spectrum. The weathering of time and the force of the gravitational tides that have shaped Peixoto into a spherical moon have also crushed much of the tezcat on the surface into a fine black soil that coats the outer surface of the moon. The finest granules of tezcat dust float into the air, becoming a smoky haze that floats across the surface of the planet and form black clouds in the sky. Among its unique flora, Peixoto is most known for its pilingitam trees—a species of tree with pitch-black leaves and pure white wood that thrives on ultraviolet light. The wood from the trees is highly prized by artists and artisans throughout the [[Mobius System]]. When it is freshly cut, it is as pliable as any softwood. However, after it is allowed to age and dry, it becomes a hardwood. Further, it is capable of absorbing many pigments, and it can be made to look like the pigmentation occurred naturally within the wood's grain. Pilingitam wood is known to be anti-fungal, impervious to insect consumption, and fire resistant. # Deity Peixoto is a deity in [[Lax]] religion who is also venerated in a variety of other cultures. Peixoto is often translated from the [[Lax]] language as "smoking mirror." It alludes to his connection to tezcat, the shiny black stone material from which the entire moon is made and from which ritual divination mirrors are made on Peixoto. They are used for shamanic rituals and prophecy, and as such Peixoto is additionally associated with divination. A god of trickery, night, and shadow, followers claim that the darkness and omnipresence of Peixoto make him something akin to "invisible", thus direct representations of him are considered inadequate or even impossible. Still, multiple depictions of the deity exist, and common trends and symbols can be identified. One of the most recognizable iconographic details of Peixoto is his horned head and face paint. Most commonly, he is shown with horizontal bands of black and yellow. Black is the foremost color associated with Peixoto, because of his role as a god of nighttime and shadow. Which parts of his body are painted black varies by site; half of his leg, the full length of his arms, the majority of his legs, or any combination thereof can be depicted. The texcat stone mirror may also appear on his chest, as a breastplate, and often is shown emanating smoke — a literal representation of his name and role. In the majority of representations, Peixoto bears the mirror in one hand, where it is surrounded by feathers of various colors. Peixoto often wears a headdress of feathers, flowers, and/or tezcat knives. According to [[Lax]] belief, Peixoto has a great many associations: the night sky, night winds, hurricanes, tezcat stone, hostility, discord, rulership, divination, temptation, jungle beasts, sorcery, beauty, war, and conflict. # Worldbuilding References **Peixoto (moon):** Giedi Prime ([Dune books](https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Giedi_Prime) and [movies](https://screenrant.com/dune-2-austin-butler-feyd-rautha-black-white-explained/)) **Peixoto (deity):** [Tezcatlipoca (Aztec deity)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tezcatlipoca#)
